EASTERN CAPE LIQUOR BOARD INTENSIFIES FIGHT AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE AND ALCOHOL ABUSE AT QOKOLWENI IN KING SABATHA DALINDYEBO
The Eastern Cape Liquor Board invites media to community education and awareness session that will seek to strengthen its fight against Gender-Based Violence and alcohol abuse at Ward 35 (Qokolweni) in King Sabatha Dalindyebo Local Municipality. The area has recently been declared to be amongst the top three hotspots in the KSD Local Municipality with high cases of gender-based violence (GBV) according to the Provincial Commissioner statistics released recently.
Due to the rising cases of GBV that are associated with the abuse of alcohol in the area, the Ward Councillor from Ward 35 (Qokolweni) requested an urgent intervention by the Eastern Cape Liquor Board to facilitate an education and awareness campaign. Alcohol abuse has been found to be the biggest contributor towards the escalation of the GBV cases in the area, hence Eastern Cape Liquor Board has seen it absolutely necessary to urgently intervene by facilitating a community engagement so as to empower community members with relevant information on how to consume alcohol responsibly and prevent potential cases of GBV.
In facilitating the community outreach, Eastern Cape Liquor Board will work with other relevant structures from the area that include Municipality, liquor traders, traditional authority, NGOs, etc.
The event will be preceded by door-to-door campaign on November 11 targeting various households and liquor outlets in order to raise awareness on all alcohol related challenges.
Media organisations are, therefore, invited to the event, which will take place as follows:
Date: 12 November 2020
Venue: Community Hall (Next to the clinic)
Issued by the Eastern Cape Liquor Board
