EASTERN CAPE LIQUOR BOARD TO LAUNCH FESTIVE SEASON ANTI-ALCOHOL ABUSE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN AT NQADU GREAT PLACE IN WILLIOWVALE.
Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) in partnership with the King of Amaxhosa, Zwelonke Sigcawu, will launch the Festive Season Anti-alcohol Abuse Awareness Campaign. Chairperson of the House of Traditional Leaders – Ngangomhlaba Matanzima – chiefs and headmen from King Zwelonke Sigcawu’s jurisdiction will also be in attendance.
Young people have been invited to participate in the event as they are the most susceptible to the abuse of alcohol. South African Breweries (SAB) will educate young people on responsible drinking through their “You Decide Campaign”, which seeks to dissuade young people from indulging in alcohol.
The launch of the campaign coincides with the circumcision period, and a stern message will also be sent out to young boys who will be undergoing circumcision to refrain from abusing alcohol so as to curb growing incidents of death of initiates.
Festive Season is a period during which members of the community are typically vulnerable to the abuse of alcohol, particularly young people and road users. The launch will seek to sensitise people of the Eastern Cape to the risks of excessive consumption of alcohol during this period.
Drunk driving remains a major concern to the ECLB and as a means of promoting responsible consumption of alcohol, drivers will be reminded of their responsibility during this period so that road fatalities can be considerably reduced during the Festive Season, in particular.
The theme of the event is “Promoting accident free Festive Season and alcohol free initiation season.”
