Eastern Cape Liquor Board to commemorate International Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Day in Mdantsane
To: All Media
27 August 2018
The Eastern Cape Liquor Board in partnership with FASfacts, Distell, Rhodes University and Department of Trade and Industry will commemorate the International Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Day (FAS) in Mdantsane.
Eastern Cape Province continues to experience growing cases of FAS, which is a condition that is experienced by an unborn baby whose mother consumes alcohol during pregnancy. Some of the alcohol that is consumed during pregnancy easily passes across the placenta to the fetus, and results in severe damage to the unborn child’s brain. This is a condition that results in various forms of disability, including both physical and non-physical conditions.
Members of the media are, therefore, invited to be part of this commemoration, which aims to address the scourge of alcohol consumption by women at a child bearing age. This commemoration will address the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, under the theme #Protect unborn babies, make every day an alcohol free pregnancy. Eastern Cape Liquor Board will also share preliminary results of the study that is being conducted in Buffalo City on the prevalence of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
Details of the Commemoration are as follows:
Date: 30 August 2018
Venue: NU 15 Community Hall, Mdantsane
