EASTERN CAPE LIQUOR BOARD FIGHTS ABUSE OF ALCOHOL THROUGH SPORTS
Eastern Cape Liquor Board will host a sporting tournament this weekend – on Saturday and Sunday – at Xesi, Kwasakhe location, in Amatole District Municipality. The aim of the tournament is to raise awareness on the harmful effects of excessive consumption of alcohol by young people, in particular. The village is faced with a number of social challenges which range from alcohol abuse to high rate of crime.
The tournament is part of ELCB’s efforts to fight the scourge of alcohol abuse especially in view of the looming festive season, which is characterised by excessive drinking of alcohol and other social ills.
The theme of the tournament is “Sport against Alcohol Abuse”, and the main target audience for the campaign will be young people who invariably are most vulnerable to abuse of alcohol.
Sixteen Soccer teams and eight netball teams from the nearby locations are expected to be part of the tournament. Among stakeholders who are going to be part of the tournament are; South African Police Service, local chief, local councillors and Nkonkobe municipality.
ECLB has arranged prizes for the winning team, which will be handed over on Sunday, 18th.
